Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center was initiated in September 2001 by curator of the 1992 Istanbul Biennial and former director of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, Vasif Kortun. Located in Beyoglu, the most vibrant part of Istanbul, Platform acts as a central meeting point in the city for cultural exchange between contemporary artists, curators and critics. The building contains an artist archive, research and lecture spaces, the recently initiated Istanbul Residency Program (open to international contemporary visual artists, critics and curators of contemporary art) and on street level a gallery committed to exhibiting both Turkish and International contemporary art.
In the past two years the gallery has been visited by over 140,000 people. The program includes both group exhibitions and solo shows by artists including Carsten Nicolai, Haluk Akakçe, Gabriel Lester and Shahzia Sikander; a lecture series with talks by among others Maria Lind, Phillipe Vergne, Vicente Todoli and Carlos Basualdo, as well as a continuous program of workshops and film/video events.
