Fibrous Room: Evolving Structural Logic

Garanti Gallery is proud to host the exhibition entitled "Fibrous Room: Evolving Structural Logic" between the 5th of January and the 8th of March 2008. The installation is part of a long term project, conceived by architects Claudia Pasquero, Marco Poletto and Nilüfer Kozikoğlu. The project is supported by Adams Kara Taylor and Lafarge and is currently run in an international academic network involving the Architectural Association School of Architecture and the Istanbul Technical University. "Fibrous Structures" is an investigation into the emergent properties of complex cementitious structures when parametrically defined and modelled through a weaving organizational logic.

The opening will be punctuated with a panel* by the architects at the Ottoman Bank Museum on 5 January, Saturday at 14:30 hrs. There will be a series of gallery talks with invited guests where academics, students and designers will have a chance to discuss the poetics of architectural design and engineering in intervals to be further announced. To invigorate the discourse there will be a round table discussion with the participation of Brett Steele (Architectural Association), Murat Güvenç (Istanbul Bilgi University) and Zeynep Mennan (Middle East Technical University) on 22 January at the Ottoman Bank Museum.

"Fibrous Structures" is an investigation into emergent properties of complex cementitious structures that are defined through the parameterization of organizational patterns and the implementation of a specific structural logic that uses filaments as base geometry. The design research process is based on the continuous feedback between the digital and the material experimentation, between the digital parametric exploration of complex fibrous assemblages and the large-scale physical prototyping of the resulting configuration. The 'Fibrous Room' installation stages a phase in the design research process bringing a full scale prototype into the exhibition space. The prototype is an assemblage of fibers defined through 3D operations into the 2D pattern grids found in Islamic art within a 3D structural logic, inspired from basket 'weaving logic'.

The exhibited assemblage is an 'extracted' localized component sampled from within the virtual fibrous field. The exhibition will stage the process therefore the built prototype will keep on evolving during exhibition time. In fact the opening will feature the fibrous structure with woven fibers solely while the concrete will be poured one month later. By hosting the actual process, the exhibition brings the viewer in contact with the potential effects generated by the physical properties of super fluid self-compacting concrete when deployed in this novel composite configuration. The experience will involve spatio-temporal variations during pouring phases, as well as physical analogue reorganization of the structural system.

Further stages of the project will define a possible growth of the network in order to finally implement the fibrous structures technique and new material composite in the construction of an habitable pavilion to be set both in Istanbul and in London.

About the Project Authors
Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto are founders of ecoLogicStudio in London. Graduates of EE (Environment and Energy) MA in Architectural Association (AA) and are currently running AA INTER10Unit. Nilüfer Kozikoğlu has graduated from DRL (Design Research Laboratory) in AA, currently runs her studio in Istanbul. The collaboration is the product of shared interest in the move to a more focused notion of architecture as a material science and research as collaborative network.
